What is globalization and to what extent is it a new phenomenon? What kinds of governance processes do states and other actors devise to deal with the consequences of globalization? And what are the causes of different patterns of global governance processes? In this seminar we want to address these questions by critically examining the concepts of globalization and global governance and applying them to various areas of international politics. The seminar is divided into four parts. After an overview of the phenomenon of globalization (part 1), we turn to concepts and explanations in the second part. The third part deals with the diverse forms of global governance before the fourth part considers the opportunities and limits of global governance structures in different policy areas and analyzes selected debates in globalization research.
